Objection handling

Handling the Gatekeeper "What's This Regarding?" Objection

This is the gatekeeper's core screening question, and the wrong answer gets you blocked instantly. Sound vague or salesy and the door shuts; sound clear and legitimate and it opens.

"What's this regarding?"
Why prospects say it

Gatekeepers are trained to filter sales calls, and this question is the trap: hesitate, waffle, or say 'it's a sales call' and you're done. But over-cleverness ('he knows me') backfires too. The winning register is calm, specific, and confident — the tone of someone with a legitimate reason who expects to be put through.

How to handle it

  • Answer immediately and confidently — hesitation reads as 'sales, block it.'
  • Be specific and business-relevant, not vague ('a few things') or evasive.
  • Use language of the person's world, not your product pitch.
  • Don't lie or fake familiarity — gatekeepers catch it and remember.
  • Assume the transfer: phrase it as a normal, expected connection.

What you can actually say

Sure — it's about [specific business area] for [person's name]. Could you put me through, or is there a better time?
Of course. I'm following up regarding [relevant topic] — is he the right person for that, or should I speak to someone else?
Happy to explain: it's to do with [concrete outcome relevant to their role]. Two minutes should cover it.
It's about [topic]. I'd rather not waste his time if he's not the right owner — is he?

What to avoid

Don't answer vaguely ("it's a bit complicated") or say outright "it's a sales call" — both are instant blocks.
